Aphids perceive plant odours by olfactory sensilla, rhinaria, on their antennae. Aphid olfaction was studied by recording electroantennograms (Visser & Piron, 1995; Visser et al., 1996, see page 10).

Secondary rhinaria on the third antennal segment of the vetch aphid, Megoura viciae

Proximal primary rhinarium on the fifth antennal segment of the vetch aphid, Megoura viciae

Distal primary rhinarium on the sixth antennal segment of the vetch aphid, Megoura viciae

Electroantennograms of Megoura viciae to (E)-2-hexenal. Digitized recordings enabled correction of electroantennograms for DC drift (B calculated from A) and smoothing (D calculated from C).

Antennal preparation for electroantennogram recordings: the head of an aphid was removed just behind the eyes. One antenna was amputated and the tip of the remaining antenna was cut leaving the distal primary rhinarium intact.
